Why do we have nails?

A common thought is that nails simply protect our nail bed. However, doctors have found that those who lose their nails develop a stronger nail bed than those with nails. A more common thought is that nails exist simply as a useful function - scratching, peeling, opening things, untying knots, etc....

So, there you have it. An answer to a question I have wondered for a while. I've finally taken the time to look up the answer. I'm a little disappointed. I guess I was hoping for a more scientific answer that the one that I found. Oh well!
